OSWEGO — Step One Creative slipped past Comic Shop by a score of 11-9 to grab its fourth-consecutive Oswego Little League Triple A baseball playoff championship title on Wednesday at Lagoe Field.
Christian Thompson singled twice, doubled, scored three times, and drove in three runs for Step One Creative.
Cole Conzone singled, walked, scored twice, and knocked in a run. Jack Schirtz walked twice, scored twice, and had an RBI. Cole Fritton walked three times and brought in a run, while Maddox Browngardt walked twice, scored a run, and collected an RBI. Elijah Brown walked, scored twice, and had an RBI. Bailey Wallace tallied three RBIs and walked, and Shane Baldwin scored a run and walked.
Thompson started on the mound for Step One. He tossed three-plus innings, striking out nine batters and giving up just one hit. Conzone (2 innings), Clara O’Connor (0.1) and Everette Farella (0.2) pitched in relief of Thompson.
Tyler Huynh singled twice, walked twice, scored a run, and had an RBI for Comic Shop. Vaughn Thingvoll walked twice, drove in two runs, and scored a run. Sidney Bivens, Reagan Wood, and Jon Stahl all walked twice, scored a run, and tallied an RBI. Cooper Howell scored a run, walked, and knocked in a run. Abram Irland walked and had an RBI, while Max Horn and Logan Caswell each walked and scored a run. Nate Chetney walked three times and scored a run. Noah Irland was issued a walk.
Huynh started on the bump for Comic Shop and went two innings. Chetney and Bivens worked in relief of Huynh, respectively going 2.1 and 0.2 innings.
Step One began its scoring in the bottom of the first. Conzone hit an RBI single, Wallace had an RBI walk to make it 2-0.
In the bottom of the second inning, Step One padded its lead. With the bases loaded, Thompson slapped a two-run single to right field. Later in the inning with two outs, Browngardt and Fritton drew bases-loaded walks to make it 6-0. Wallace was then hit by a pitch, forcing in another run to make it 7-0.
In the home third, Brown and Thompson hit consecutive singles to push Schirtz and Baldwin across home plate. After Brown scored on an error, it was 10-0.
In the top of the fourth, Comic Shop cut into Step One’s lead. Abram Irland, Reagan Wood, and Thingvoll each walked with the bases loaded, scoring three runs to make it 10-3.
Step One plated its final run in the bottom of the fourth when Browngardt scored on an error.
In the top of the fifth, Huynh reached on an infield single for Comic Shop, bringing home Horn. That drew Comic Shop to within 11-4.
Comic Shop made a comeback effort in the sixth. Five consecutive walks issued to Wood, Caswell, Thingvoll, Stahl, and Howell led to three runs, pulling Comic Shop to within 11-7. With one out, Bivens and Huynh each walked with the bases loaded to force in two more runs, making it 11-9.
Step One’s Farella, however, recorded two strikeouts to end the Comic Shop threat and give Step One the playoff crown.
