OSWEGO — Jimmy Phelps runs more in Big-Block Modifieds than Small Blocks, but Thursday afternoon the “Baldwinsville Bandit” captured the pole position for Saturday’s DIRTcar 358 Modified Salute to the Troops 150 at Oswego Speedway.
Phelps tuned in a fast time of 20.948 to capture the pole.
“The first time out with the car was last night,” he said. “It felt okay in practice, but I didn’t think it was a top-six car. The track tightened up a bit and it really helped out.”
The top six drivers are locked into the Saturday afternoon race.
Erick Rudolph, of Ransomville, was clocked just .014 of a second behind Phelps with a 20.962 as the pair will lead the field to the green.
The second row will be comprised of Tim Fuller (21.036), of Edwards, and Small-Block Modified rookie Dave Marcuccilli from Cayuga (21.045), who was the lone full-time 358-Mod driver in the top four.
Completing the locked in drivers were Matt Williamson (21.059), of St. Catherine’s, Ontario, and Todd Root (21.070) from Phelps.
Local drivers qualifying among the top 30 were Central Square’s Billy Whittaker, Oswego’s Chris Hile and Fulton’s Jason Occhino.
The top six are guaranteed starters for Saturday’s event, while the remainder of the 83-car field will compete in the DIRTcar 358-Modified 25-lap heats tonight.
