CASTLETON, Vermont — The Oswego State women’s hockey team opened its season over the weekend with a pair of victories over the host Castleton University Spartans.
The Lakers won 5-2 on Friday and 3-2 on Saturday.
Oswego State (2-0) is at Plattsburgh Friday and Saturday for a two-game series against the Cardinals.
Oswego State 5, Castleton University 2: Philomena Teggart notched two goals to help Oswego State top Castleton 5-2 on Friday.
Emma Morisette, Megan Teachout and Avery Webster each chipped in a goal for the Lakers. Eryn Stewart provided two assists, with Kyleigh Grugin, Mia Conboy, Morgan Shines, Teachout, Kate Randazzo, Amber Thomas, and Teggart added an assist apiece.
Maeghan Vasile and Courtney Gauthier scored for Castleton. Brooke Greenwood contributed an assist.
Rachael Farmer stopped 18 shots for Oswego State.
Alexis Kalm and Katlyn Hathaway combined to make 30 saves for Castleton.
The Lakers took a commanding 3-0 lead in the first period on goals from Morisette, Teggart, and Teachout. Morisette scored 2:43 into the game from Stewart and Grugin. Teggart’s first marker of the game came at 6:47, and Teachout lit the lamp at 17:28.
Teggart made it 4-0 at 5:57 of the second period when she scored a power- play goal from Randazzo and Thomas.
Castleton cut it to 4-1 on Vasile’s goal, but Webster put the Lakers up 5-1 with her goal at 17:13 in the second period.
Gauthier provided Castleton’s last goal of the matchup while the Spartans were short-handed 10:58 of the third period.
Oswego State 3, Castleton 2: Eryn Stewart scored the game-winning goal at 17:33 of the third period on a power play as Oswego State edged Castleton 3-2 on Saturday.
Megan Teachout and Morgan Shines also had power-play goals for the Lakers, who finished 3-for-7 with the player advantage.
Bailey Thomas, Amber Thomas, Stewart, Avery Webster, Kate Randazzo and Philomena Teggart had an assist apiece.
Rachael Farmer recorded 18 saves between the pipes for the Lakers. Alexis Kalm made 45 saves for Castleton.
Following a scoreless first period, the Lakers went to work in the second period. Teachout slapped in a power-play goal at 13:46, and Shines scored at 14:28 for a 2-0 Oswego State advantage.
Castleton battled back to tie the game at 2-2 on goals from Samantha Lawler at 18:30 of the second period, and Brooke Greenwood on a power play at 3:04 of the third period.
That set the stage for Stewart’s winning goal with 2:27 to play.
