OSWEGO — The Oswego State men’s soccer team played to a 1-1 overtime tie on Saturday against visiting Cortland, ranked 13th in NCAA Division III by D3soccer.com.
Both teams are 2-0-1 in SUNY Athletic Conference play. Cortland is 6-2-2 overall, and the Lakers are 7-3-1 overall.
After a scoreless first half, the Lakers needed just 34 seconds in the second half to take the lead. Caleb Asamoah settled a bad touch by a Cortland player several yards outside the 18-yard box. Asamoah dribbled toward the top of the arc and drew the attention of three Cortland defenders to his left. The senior capitalized on the defensive shift, passing the ball between Red Dragon defenders to freshman Steven Rojas. Rojas collected the ball on the top left of the box and used two quick touches before lofting a shot over a leaping Cortland goalie and just under the crossbar for a 1-0 Laker lead.
Cortland tied it 15 minutes later. A Dragon player attempted a shot from inside the box and it was slowed by a teammate’s heel. A bounce to the player’s toe and barely kept onside, Cortland’s Anthony Ruggiero shot past diving goalie Brian Terra (6 saves) to knot the game.
Oswego State will host Oneonta at 4 p.m. Friday at Laker Turf Stadium.
