CORTLAND — Host Cortland outscored Oswego State 6-5 in a penalty-kick shootout Saturday to advance in the SUNY Athletic Conference men’s soccer playoffs.
The teams played to a 1-1 tie through regulation and overtime, meaning that a shootout was necessary to determine which team was to move on to the SUNYAC semifinals.
After a scoreless first half, Cortland took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Ivan Dam at 82:45 off a crossing pass from Sam Fuller.
At 85:51, Oswego State’s Omar Espinoza netted the equalizer on a free kick to the upper left side of the goal, making the score 1-1.
Oswego State pressured Cortland in both overtime periods with seven shots, but couldn’t find the back of the net.
Goalkeepers Brian Terra for the Lakers and Braden Melveney for the Dragons each made five saves. Both teams took 18 shots, and Cortland had an 8-5 advantage on corner kicks.
Oswego State finishes its season with a 9-7-2 overall record.
Cortland (8-6-3) will play at top-seeded Oneonta in the semifinals at 1 p.m. Wednesday.
