BELLINZONA, Switzerland — The Oswego State men’s hockey team kicked off its European trip on a high note with two victories against GDT Bellinzona of Swiss 1 Liga of the Regio League.
The Lakers won 5-0 on Friday then 6-1 on Sunday over Bellinzona.
Oswego State will play its final game of the tour today at 8 p.m. (2 p.m. EDT) against Alleghe of the Italian Hockey League.
Oswego State 6, GDT Bellinzona 1: Six different Laker icemen scored in the 6-1 victory.
Jody Sullivan, Josh LeBlanc, Tanner Spink, Travis Broughman, Tyson Kirkby and Michael Gillespie each notched a goal for Oswego State. Mitch Emerson had two assists, while Gillespie, Kirkby, Joseph Molinaro and Spink each chipped in an assist.
Cedric Hansen, Steven Kozikoski and David Richer each played a period between the pipes. Hansen and Richer had seven saves in the first and third period, respectively, while Kozikoski tallied six saves in the second.
The Lakers fell short on capitalizing on a couple of power plays, but their penalty-kill unit managed to kill four Bellinzona’s penalty-driven opportunities.
Sullivan started off the scoring with a goal in the first five minutes of the first period. Four minutes later, LeBlanc buried a goal off of a Kirkby feed to make it 2-0. Later in the period, Spink found the back of the net for a 3-0 advantage, helped by assists from Gillespie and Emerson.
Bellinzona scored a goal to cut the deficit, but Oswego State had a 3-1 cushion heading into the first intermission.
Further into the matchup, Broughman and Molinaro slapped in back-to-back goals for a 5-1 Laker advantage.
Oswego State tabbed its last goal from Gillespie, who received assists from Spink and Emerson.
Oswego State 5, GDT Bellinzona 0: The Lakers kept Bellinzona out of the net for a 5-0 win.
Charlie Pelnik, Michael Gillespie, Josh Zizek, Max Novick and Josh LeBlanc each tallied a goal for Oswego State. Joey Scorpio and Mitch Emerson both provided two assists, and Novick, Gillespie and Chris MacMillan each notched an assist.
David Richer got the start in goal, stopping nine shots. Cedric Hansen made seven saves in the second period, while Steven Kozkoski had 11 saves.
Oswego State killed three penalties to keep Bellinzona out of goal.
The Lakers and Bellinzona were scoreless after the first period. Pelnik scored his goal two minutes into the second period, giving Oswego State a 1-0 lead.
Later in the second, Gillespie found the back of the net off of assists from Emerson and Novick. Zizek then made it 3-0 Lakers when buried a shorthanded goal with a few minutes left in the second.
Oswego State bulked its lead to 4-0 in the third period when Novick contributed his goal, who was assisted by LeBlanc and MacMillan.
LeBlanc wrapped up the Lakers’ scoring effort with a goal in the final minutes of the third period. Scorpio and MacMillan connected on back-to-back passes for assists.
