VERONA — The Oswego, Fulton, Hannibal, and Mexico varsity cross country teams competed in their respective Section III class meets Saturday at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill High School.
Oswego competed in the Class A races. The girls squad placed sixth, and the boys took ninth.
Fulton competed in Class B, as the girls team finished eighth and the boys came in 10th.
Hannibal and Mexico both ran in Class C. The Warrior boys team grabbed sixth place.
Miranda Gilbert qualified for states in the Class A race, finishing 10th overall with a time of 19:54. The state meet is Nov. 16 in Plattsburgh.
Molly Fitzgibbons missed out on punching her ticket for states, placing 11th in 20:12. Other finishers for the Buccaneers included Gretchen Dowd (52nd, 24:13), Ava Cloonan (55th, season-best time of 24:59), Anne Niger (61st, 25:28), Ashley Patterson (65th, 25:45) and Ashley Finch (80th, 28:54). Freshman Emily Conzone also ran her best time (37:55). Oswego had a winning season for the third year in a row and is sending a runner to the state meet.
In the boys’ race, Jason Purtell ran to a 16th-place finish (season-best time of 17:34). Ethan Hunt placed 48th (18:56), while Matthew Chubon took 51st (19:12). Landon Voss (68th, 20:25), Connor Mulcahey (69th, best time of 20:30), Zach DeMott (70th, 20:32) and Sam Liepke (71st, 20:38) also ran for the Bucs. Senior Logan Engle (22:30) also ran his best race of the season.
Oswego’s season showed promise, with half the team consisting of current juniors.
Ryan Carroll (18:49) and Abby Mainville (21:59) each placed 14th in their respective Class B races.
For the girls team, Meilin Lamanna took 33rd (23:28). Other runners for the Raiders included Phoebe Blair (51st, 24:28), Laura Hayden (62nd, 25:22), Autumn Schneider (67th, 25:41), Devon Nicholson (70th, 25:54), and Julieanna Vasquez-Heaney (77th, 26:18).
Dylan Waldron placed 63rd (21:32), and Elijah Turner finished 69th (22:21) for the Fulton boys. Also racing were Ethan Demars (72nd, 22:39), Adon Heaney (75th, 22:53), Braeden Dempsey (80th, 23:56), and Jaydon Muckey (81st, 24:00).
Dillon Plantz qualified for states as he finished third overall in the Class C boys race with a time of 17:18.
Noah Kuc grabbed 17th with a time of 18:10. Xavier Lastra placed 59th (19:49), Austin Calkins came in 61st (20:01), and Jacob Dennison took 63rd (20:08). Alex Hall (74th, 20:23) and Mason Garbus (75th, 20:23) also competed for the Warriors.
Hunter Herrington grabbed 88th (20:30) in the Class C meet for the Tigers. Evan Ladd (115th, 21:34), Elias Hibbert (147th, 23:05), and Daniel Chen (149th, 23:16) ran as well.
Morgan Fischer (118th, 27:47) and Emma Hyde (134th, 30:46) competed for the Mexico girls.
