SYRACUSE — Oswego defeated Central Square 10-2 in pool play of the District 8 Little League 10-and-under tournament on Saturday at Skyway Park in Syracuse.
Oswego takes on North Syracuse in the second game of pool play today at 6 p.m. Pool play wraps up on Wednesday as Oswego faces Mexico at 6 p.m.
The top two teams from each of three pools advance to the championship bracket.
Brett DeGrenier led the charge on offense for Oswego with two doubles, a triple, and two runs scored. Eddie Kuzawski singled, homered, scored three times and walked. Christian Thompson and Michael Waters each chipped in a single and a run scored. Hunter Joseph walked, was hit by a pitch, and scored twice. Gavin Guynn ripped a double and a triple.
Kuzawski started on the mound for Oswego and earned the victory. Pitching four innings, he struck out nine while allowing two runs, a hit, and a walk. DeGrenier tossed two innings of relief. He struck out four and allowed a double and a walk.
Oswego took a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning sparked by a two-run double by DeGrenier. DeGrenier scored later in the inning on a sacrifice fly.
Central Square cut the deficit to 3-2 in the bottom of the third inning. In the top of the fourth, however, Kuzawski increased Oswego’s lead to 5-2 with an inside-the-park two-run homer.
Oswego plated five runs in the sixth for a 10-2 advantage. The big hit came from DeGrenier when he hit a triple to knock in a couple of runs.
