OSWEGO — The Lake Ontario Counties Summer Fishing Derby is underway, and a New Jersey angler currently holds the grand-prize lead.

David Davenport of Branchville, New Jersey, weighed a 27-pound, 13-ounce salmon at Woody’s Tackle & General Store in Pulaski. Davenport is in line to take home the grand prize of $10,000 for the largest salmon.

The derby began June 29 and runs through July 28, when the awards ceremony will be held at Captain Jack’s in Sodus Point.

There are four divisions in the summer derby. They are the Salmon Division, the Lake Trout Division, the Rainbow/Steelhead Division, and the Brown Trout Division. Each division winner gets $1,000. Remaining prizes are $400 for second, $300 for third, $200 for fourth, $100 for fifth, $75 for places 6-10, and $50 for places 11-20.

Some Oswego County anglers are among the leaders.

In the Salmon Division, Dean Taylor of Conesus is in first place with a 26-pound, 12-ounce fish weighed in Waterport. Parish’s Ellee Parkhurst is 10th with a 25-pound, 3-ounce salmon weighed at Henderson Harbor. Kelly Monette of Bernhards Bay is 17th with a 24-pound, 5-ounce fish weighed at Woody’s in Pulaski.

In the Lake Trout Division, the leader is North Tonawanda’s Edward Klejdys with a 24-pound, 5-ounce catch weighed in Lewiston. Five Oswego County anglers are in the top 15. Pulaski’s Richard Nau is fifth with a 19-pound, 6-pounce catch. Oswego’s Clint Bartel is seventh with an 18-pound, 14-ounce fish. Mike Kinsey of Pulaski is 11th with a 17-pound, 12-ounce fish. In 13th place is Mexico’s Jan Chybinski with a 17-pound, 5-ounce catch, while Mexico’s James English is 14th with a 17-pound, 5-ounce fish.

Steven Biernacki of Medina holds the lead in the Rainbow/Steelhead Division. He caught a 14-pound, 8-ounce fish and weighed it in Kent. Pulaski’s Denise Schneider is fourth with a 12-pound, 8-ounce fish weighed at K&G Lodge in Oswego.

Jim Sanford tops the Brown Trout Division with a 16-pound, 9-ounce fish weighed in Williamson.

Derby weigh stations in Oswego County are K&G Lodge in Oswego, and All Seasons Sports and Woody’s Tackle & General Store in Pulaski. Anglers may register at any of those weigh stations, or at Fat Nancy’s Tackle Shop in Pulaski.
