MEXICO — Senior Brionna Emery and junior William “Buddy” Ruby were honored as the Laurence “Sparky” Rector Athletes of the Year at Wednesday’s Block M ceremony, held at the Mexico High School gym.

Emery excelled in varsity soccer and lacrosse in her final year with the Lady Tigers. She was also named Most Valuable Player for her respective sports.

Ruby starred on the varsity basketball and soccer squads this season. He received MVP honors for basketball.

Mexico Academy and Central Schools Athletic Director Andy Gates welcomed everyone to the ceremony and praised the ones involved in athletics with the Tigers.

“I’d like to thank everyone that helps run the athletic programs (here at Mexico),” he said.

With his first school year as athletic director almost in the books, Gates mentioned how he is excited for the future of MACS athletics.

“It’s truly been a pleasure working to provide athletic opportunities for our student-athletes,” he said. “I’m looking forward to all we can accomplish together in the coming years through hard work, determination, and dedication.”

The ceremony also revealed this year’s inductees for the MACS Hall of Fame. The Class of 2019 includes Russell Daniels (2002 graduate), William Dumas (1956), and Blaine Wills (1990).
