Athletes of the Year

Hannah Kuc and Zach Williams each received the Hannibal Boosters’ Most Outstanding Senior Athlete Award on Tuesday at Hannibal High School.

HANNIBAL — Zach Williams and Hannah Kuc received the Most Outstanding Senior Athlete awards at Tuesday’s Hannibal Sports Boosters banquet at Hannibal High School.

Williams excelled in football and wrestling for the Warriors. Kuc performed for the Lady Warriors’ cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track squads.

Hannibal Central School District Superintendent Christopher Staats welcomed athletes, coaches, and family members to the festivities.

“Tonight is a celebration of our students and all of those who touched their lives,” he said.

Staats gave praise to all of the coaches, full time and volunteer, for helping to steer student-athletes in the right direction.

“Your coaches get into all of these great opportunities to participate in and expand your knowledge for academics and the sport you’re playing,” he said.

Once a Warrior, always a Warrior. That phrase was recognized in Staats’ closing remarks.

“Thank you for your efforts and showing your Warrior pride,” he said.

Three athletes were honored with the Jimmy Butterfield Memorial Sportsmanship Award. Butterfield was a three-sport athlete at Hannibal who was tragically killed in a car accident in July 2001. During his time with the Warriors, he was an exceptional athlete in football, wrestling, and track.

Logan Fenske got the nod for Butterfield’s football award; Dakota Thibault was named the wrestling award recipient; and Mason Garbus brought home track honors.

Sean Mason was selected as the recipient of the Chuck Lum Track Award. Lum was a Class of 1972 graduate who passed away in a swimming accident. He was a three-sport athlete in football, baseball, and track. His spirit lives on in the award, and his traits matched Mason’s characteristics as a student-athlete.
