FULTON — The Fulton varsity girls volleyball team fell to a 3-0 sweep at the hands of Homer on Tuesday at G. Ray Bodley High School.
The Lady Trojans won 25-18, 25-14, and 25-21 in the three sets.
Sydney Lawson led the Lady Raiders with six kills, an ace and five digs. Abby Pawlewicz tallied 19 digs, and Samantha McRae had 13 digs of her own. Ella Henderson chipped in nine assists and five digs, while Jayda Blakeman added nine digs and four assists. Chloe Hurlbut tabbed seven kills and three digs. Hope Mirabito (3 kills), Chyanne Okoniewski (2 kills, assist, block), and Mackenzie Treneer (2 assists, 2 digs) contributed their efforts for the Lady Raiders.
Homer jumped to a 4-2 lead in the first set. The Lady Trojans then rocketed a 10-3 advantage, prompting Fulton coach Pat Hamlin to call timeout to give her players a short break.
The Lady Trojans jumped to a 17-7 cushion, but a small 4-2 run from Fulton made it 19-11. Fulton compiled a 7-3 dash for a 20-13 deficit. The Lady Raiders got as close as 21-16, but Homer was able to finish off the set and come away with a 25-18 victory to go up 1-0 in the match.
The second set was more of the same between Homer and Fulton. The Lady Trojans took a 6-2 lead. Homer then outscored Fulton, 7-2, for an 11-4 advantage. The Lady Trojans found themselves up 17-7 at one point, but a 4-0 run from Fulton made the score 17-11 and kept the Lady Raiders alive in the set.
Fulton didn’t see much opportunity to climb back the rest of the set, as Homer went on an 8-2 run for a 25-14 win and a 2-0 lead in the match.
Homer zipped a quick 9-2 lead in the third set, which led to Hamlin calling another timeout. Before anyone could blink, the Lady Trojans took a commanding 16-6 lead. Going through the set, Fulton slices the deficit to 20-13. Later on, the Lady Raiders crept closer at 23-18. Fulton even came within three at 24-21 down the stretch, but the Lady Trojans shut the door on the comeback with a 25-21 win and a completion of the match sweep.
Fulton (0-2) hits the road to Auburn today as they take on the Lady Maroons in a league match that begins at 6 p.m.
