OSWEGO — Muriel Adams Harrison (“Mike”), 93, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 7, 2019, at Seneca Hill Manor Nursing Home in Oswego, surrounded by her loving family.

Born on Aug. 24, 1925 in Washington DC, she was the daughter of Edward G. and Muriel H. Adams. Muriel grew up in Chevy Chase, Maryland, and graduated from American University in Washington DC in 1946. At AU Muriel participated in USO hospital shows and was a member of the journalism and drama honor societies and Alpha Chi Omega sorority. While in college Muriel met her future husband John Robert “Bob” Harrison.  They married on Sept. 26, 1946 and moved several times while Bob pursued his Masters and Doctoral degrees. During this time Muriel was employed in administrative positions at AU, Johns Hopkins University, the University of Minnesota and UM Medical School where Bob was completing his degrees.

Muriel and Bob then moved to Oxford, Ohio, after he was hired as a professor at Miami University. They lived there for 15 years while raising their children Bill and EllenBeth. They next lived in Washington, Pennsylvania, for several years while Bob taught at Washington and Jefferson College. In 1986 the family moved to Oswego after Bob was hired as Biology Department Chairman at the State University College at Oswego. 

Muriel’s passion for decorating led her to earn a degree from The New York School of Interior Design. She was employed by Brown Davis Furniture Company in Oswego and later opened her own interior design business, Harrison Interiors. With her daughter EllenBeth, Muriel co-owned their popular craft business “The Showcase” which they operated for 10 years.

Muriel was very involved in the Oswego community, supporting and volunteering for many organizations. She served on the Oswego Hospital Auxiliary, was a volunteer manager of the gift shop and helped establish and design the Adopt-a-Room program. Muriel was a Rice Creek Associate and helped to develop and expand the herb garden. She was on the Ladies Home Auxiliary and served as treasurer for many years, and was a member of Zonta International and a past local president. Muriel was also an appointed trustee of the Oswego Public Library and chaired Friends of the Library. She was involved with Winter Club, the Heritage Foundation, the H. Lee White Maritime Museum, and Fort Ontario.

In their later years Muriel and Bob moved to the Oswego Springside Community where she continued to enjoy reading, gardening, crafting, and stamp collecting. Muriel graciously hosted Bridge Club, family gatherings and her very popular annual Holiday Open House, which was attended by many friends and family over the years

Muriel is survived by her son William (Kathryn) Harrison of Oswego, and daughter EllenBeth (David) Gaffney of Fulton; one brother Edward G. (Patricia) Adams of Florida; two grandchildren Elizabeth and Will Weimer, both of Oswego; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Muriel was predeceased by her husband Bob in 2003 and her sister Patricia Adams Foley in 1995.

Calling hours will be 3-5 p.m. on Wednesday, June 19, at Nelson Funeral Home, 11 W. Albany St., Oswego. 

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 20, at the Church of the Resurrection, 120 W. Fifth St., Oswego.

Burial will be held privately at the convenience of the family at Oswego Town Rural Cemetery.
