OSWEGO — Gary “Garf” J. Fields, 79, of Oswego, passed on Oct. 26, 2020, enveloped in the love of his family.
Born in Ottawa, Canada he was the son of the late Thomas and Muriel Young Fields.
Gary acquired his US citizenship as a young man when he moved to Spencerport, New York, to raise his family. He worked as a union electrician and was a proud member of IBEW Local 86. His adventure-some spirit took him to a job on the Alaska oil pipeline, which resulted in many colorful and entertaining stories about life on the North Slope.
In the early 1980s, Gary moved to Oswego, New York, where he worked on many jobs for IBEW Local 43. He was respected by his peers and made many lifelong friends throughout his career. He retired in 2003.
Garf could figure out, troubleshoot, repair and restore almost anything, but his passion was cars, especially Corvettes. He enjoyed working, meeting people, sharing stories and socializing, but family was always his priority. His loved ones will never forget him because there will always be another anecdote to share.
Gary is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Sylvia, and devoted children, Kim (Bob) Sodoma of Brockport, Shawn (Rose) Fields, and Mark (Cindy) Fields, both of Raleigh, North Carolina. Also surviving are his sister Gail (Claude) Genero of Perth, Australia; and eight grandchildren, Justin, Brendon, Tyler and Emma Sodoma, and Marisa, Connor, Ethan and Taylor Fields.
Gary was predeceased by two siblings, his sister Ruth Marlot and brother Eric Fields.
A calling period will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 2, with a funeral service to follow at Nelson Funeral Home, 11 W. Albany St., Oswego.
Entombment will be in All Saints Mausoleum in St. Peter Cemetery.
