PULASKI — A local trooper helped a wayward canine find his way home after becoming lost near the interstate, officials said this week.
According to the New York State Police, a 9-1-1 call Wednesday afternoon alerted authorities of a large dog in the roadway of I-81 near mile marker 121 in the town of Richland.
Trooper Caleb Longley, based out of the state police Pulaski barracks, found the St. Bernard attempting to cross the highway. After exiting his vehicle, Longley was able to secure the dog with minimal difficulty, troopers told The Palladium-Times Thursday.
With assistance from the Richland town dog control office and some helpful local residents, Longley was able to locate the dog’s owner. According to police, one of the owner’s children appeared to have left a door open accidentally, allowing the dog to escape.
All parties were reunited safe and sound.
