OSWEGO — Port City native Dan Lupa has won the 2019 Live Local Shop Local $1,000 shopping spree grand prize, concluding another record-breaking campaign that recognizes local businesses for their contribution to the Oswego community.
Lupa, 33, claimed his prize last week at The Palladium-Times offices after he was selected in the grand prize random drawing. Thousands of Oswegonians entered the contest, which began April 29.
“With my girlfriend and friends, we just decided to go for it and started putting in the pieces,” said Lupa. Contestants in the Live Local Shop Local contest could submit entry forms at shops and restaurants around the Port City, resulting in an overflowing amount of hopeful players.
Only one person could win the $1,000 shopping spree, however, and Lupa knew just how he was going to enjoy it.
“We love going to Canale’s and sitting on their new patio and enjoying the live music,” he said, noting the Morolo Combo — a jam-packed platter of chicken parmigiana, Italian sausage, meatballs and pasta is a particular favorite.
In addition to Canale’s, Lupa selected Burke’s Do It Best Home Center, Murdock’s Bicycles & Sports, Paul’s Big M and Scriba Meats to cash in his winnings.
As a lifelong Oswego resident, Lupa says it’s encouraging to see the Port City’s downtown area going through so much revitilization.
“Being from here, I want to see local business thrive and there’s some great new programming downtown for young people,” he said.
In an age of convenience through online shopping, Lupa’s one customer who appreciates and values the local aspect of shopping throughout his hometown.
“I just got a bike from Murdock’s, so I know I’ll be going back there and I know the people and there’s consistency for what I can expect,” Lupa said. “There’s a personal connection, you can see the merchandise and trust that it’s going to last.”
Jon Spaulding, Publisher of The Palladium-Times, said this year was the biggest, best installment of Live Local, Shop Local yet.
"Each year we get excited to showcase the finest that Oswego's local businesses have to offer," said Spaulding. "Congratulations to Mr. Lupa on his winnings and we hope he enjoys it as much as all our past winners have."
Live Local, Shop Local will return in 2020.
