OSWEGO — Oswego city police say a man has died following a Friday collision between his motorcycle and a sports utility vehicle.
Jarold J. Smith, 47, of Oswego, succumbed to his injuries at Upstate Hospital in Syracuse shortly after the crash that occurred in the area of 290 state Route 104, police said in a Saturday press release.
In the release, police said Smith was eastbound on state Route 104 shortly before 3:30 p.m. Friday and witnesses reported he was “accelerating at a high rate of speed” on his 1988 Suzuki motorcycle.
A 2017 Chevrolet Equinox was traveling in the opposite direction, police said, and when the Chevy tried to make a left hand turn into a commercial establishment, “the motorcycle attempted to slow down prior to entering the intersection but was unable,” police said.
Smith’s motorcycle struck the Equinox, “causing the operator of the motorcycle to be ejected.” Police said the driver of the Equinox “was also evaluated at the hospital, treated and released.”
“No tickets have been issued at this time,” police said. “The Oswego City Police Department does not believe there was alcohol (or drug) involvement.”
The investigation is ongoing, according to police, and anyone with further information is asked to call the Oswego City Police Department at 315-342-8120.
