Old Tyme Fiddlers to resume free concerts Aug. 25

The New York State Old Tyme Fiddlers Association, above, will resume its free concert series on Aug. 25.

REDFIELD – The New York State Old Tyme Fiddlers Association free concert series resumes on Sunday, August 25, 2-5 p.m., with the always popular performance of its Central Chapter, one of the largest chapters, whose members come mostly from the area north of Oneida Lake. This free concert takes place at the North American Fiddlers’ Hall of Fame and Museum, 1121 Comins Road, Redfield and is funded in part by the New York State Council on the Arts, a State Agency with the support of Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the State Legislature.

The variety of the Central Chapter’s performances has made its annual concert a favorite with audiences. This year the group is excited about performing several new tunes taught through online tutorials by its new vice president, Chad Miller, a Fiddlers’ Hall of Fame inductee, on his website and on the Central Chapter You Tube channel he created for the group. More advanced fiddlers have also been meeting regularly to practice and learn new tunes from Chad, while newer fiddlers have been practicing new tunes with Sarah Wilson. This has been a great help for many members who, despite being excellent fiddlers, do not read music, but instead learn by ear. Jessie Gotham, of Camden, will accompany the group on piano.

Audience members are invited to take a break during the concert to tour the Fiddlers’ Hall of Fame and Museum, where they can check out the newly built display space and listen to digitized historic fiddle performances. Kids will enjoy playing in the well equipped playground while their parents watch them from the adjacent seating area. The whole family can enjoy refreshments from the Fiddlers’ Kitchen while watching and listening to the concert. All facilities are handicapped accessible and enclosable in the event of bad weather.
